Fifth edition of the Bernácer Prize launched on September 1th

The Bernácer prize for the year 2005 is launched. The prize is awarded annually to recognise the work of young European economists and to encourage research on macroeconomic and financial issues. The deadline for nominations is 15 November, 2005. The winner will be announced in December. Read the Rules of the 2005 Bernácer prize.

The 2004 Bernacer Prize award ceremony
The prize was awarded to Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe at a solemn ceremony at the Banco de España in Madrid, on June 29, 2005. Read the Introductory speech by Jaime Caruana, Governor of Banco de España. Edward Prescott, co-winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Economics, handed the laureate a diplome and a medal. Read the acceptance speech by Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe. 
The award ceremony was preceded by a conference on "Coping with economic challenges ahead: The role of hours worked. Europe vs US", organized by the OBCE and hosted by Banco de España.

Stephanie Schmitt-Grohé, winner of the 2004 Bernácer Prize
The Selection Committee has decided that the 2004 Bernacer Prize should be awarded to the German economist, Stephanie Schmitt-Grohé "for her important research devoted to developing and applying the tools for evaluation of macroeconomic (fiscal and monetary) stabilization policies in the context of economies subject to nominal and real distortions." The prize will be will be awarded at a solemn ceremony in Madrid, on June 29, 2005. The winner will be given a medal, a personal diploma, and a cash award of 25,000 euros.

The Selection Committee is composed by Lucas Papademos, Vicepresident of the European Central Bank (Chair); Prof. Juan José Dolado, Universidad Carlos III (Secretary); Prof. Jordi Gali, Universitat Pompeu Fabra; Prof. Francesco Giavazzi, Bocconi University; Prof. Eduardo Schwartz (UCLA); Dr. José Viñals, Bank of Spain; and Prof. Charles Wiplosz, Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva.
